Elopement + Marraige Laws – Idaho, Oregon, Utah, + Washington

While you plan out your perfect elopement day with all the sweet + intentional details that make the whole thing special and so *you,* it’s a good idea to wrap your head around the legal requirements early on in the process.

Some things may seem a little overwhelming, but trust me, it’s so worth it to know + prepare for the requirements. Think of it as laying a solid foundation so that you can have the freedom to plan + personalize your elopement.

The main things to plan for:

  • Make sure to bring CASH to pay for your marriage license
  • Check the waiting period-some states require a 3 day wait period between getting your license and legally marrying.
  • A certified officiant is required for each of these states. (You can have a friend or family member get certified for free! I’ve linked that below as well.)
  • Some states require 2 witnesses over the age of 18. (As your photographer I can be one of those!)
  • Permits are required in some places, like state + national parks. (Don’t worry, I’ll help you with all that too.)

This will give you a base to go off of. I’ll help you with specific requirements that apply to your elopement location.
